Happy New Year!!!

Well we are off to a great start! Here goes the order for hosting! For January Bertha will need to pick a book and a date quickly! I’m proposing January 25th at 7:00. Then in February, Trudy’s friend (Shannon?) can choose a book. The next choice would either be another new guest or mine. I’m going to choose a fitness and well being book, and I’ve already got it picked out. If Bertha wants to go in February, then we could trade. That would give you some time to choose. Email me back if the 25th works… I also will need people’s cell phones and updated emails if any of that has changed. Thanks.

Book Club – October!

Against Medical Advice by James Patterson is about a boy that has an uncontrollable urge to shake his head.  He is now an adult but this book was written so many would understand the fear families have when medical advice seems just as harmful as it is helpful.  We’ll meet at Trudy’s on Thursday, Oct 22 at 6:15.  She’ll provide dinner for all and I’m not sure if we are supposed to bring something.  You could give her a call to see what she needs.
Julie has the next pick.  The meeting is set for Wed., Nov. 18.  She’ll send information on the book selection soon.

Here is a good read!

The Grapes of Wrath The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am just in awe. I can’t even explain how much I love every chapter. I will write an in depth review when I find all my sticky notes! BTW I’ve been reading this book for about 5 months. I can only do about 12 pages at a time. It’s just heavy material and it really makes me visualize.

The Book Thief

The Book Thief

The New York Times has the feeling that The Book Thief is “Harry Potter and the Holocaust,” but it’s so much more.  Originally this book was written for adult audiences, but as it has been translated into other languages, more young adults have been attracted to these 500 pages of narrative and commentary by Death. (BTW- it’s a quick read.)  Yes Death is the story teller and he does a nice job.  He isn’t too much of a spoiler but he does use your senses to help you see.  I like that about “him.”  From “silver eyes” to “lemon hair,” I can see it all.  Well I hope you all enjoy this.  It’s a good transition for where we head next!  I was thinking it would be good to end our discussion on the power of words.  So keep that in mind.

Laura’s House

Monday, June 29th

May BOOK!

picture-3EDIT!  Okay- Sorry about the date mix up.  My calendar starts on a Monday instead of Sunday and this year I’m all messed up!!!  Anyhow- lets plan for Thursday, May 21!

Bertha has selected the book for our next meeting.  We will be reading and discussing Every Now & Then by Karen Kingsbury.  It’s a spin off of her September 11th series.  It’s a stand alone novel, which is good if you haven”t read Kingsbury.

Let me know by email if you need directions.

Home to Holly Springs

After Father Tim has met everyone on his long list of past friends and families, you just feel relieved.  You knew he was going to find Tommy, but you weren’t quite sure since the book was ending soon.  BTW- I just finished today and the meeting was last week:0)  Needless to say, everyone loves Mitford but this book was too mushy and perfect for us.  Yes we liked it but it didn’t leave you thinking… just satisfied.

Thanks for the chili!

We met this week to discuss and even watch parts of To Kill a Mockingbird.  I’m hoping that we even got to name the new member of Trudy’s household (Fini)!  I guess we walked away thinking about integrity, innocence, and censorship.  Thanks for a great meeting ladies!

Check out the new selection for February!

If you click on Current Title you can see what we chose for February.  The discussion this month lead us down a path of real intamacy and understanding.  We realized after reading Prisoner of Tehran that some people are really not asked about difficult times in their lives.  It’s a lesson learned for us.  We have even discussed having a fellowship time separate from bookclub.  If you are interested, we’ll discuss it at the next meeting (tbd).
